5 Tips for Buying Reliable Used Car

By: Octadyne Systems

Buying a quality used car or truck need not be as nerve-wracking as it often is. Many people go into their car shopping experience, already on the defensive, fully expecting to be swindled, bullied, or overcharged.  The truth is that not all car dealers fit the stereotype, and if you do your homework before you step onto any lot, you can ensure you are fully prepared to negotiate with the dealership to get the best possible deal.

A little preparation goes a long way, and these tips, each of them equally important, can help you go into your car buying experience feeling confident, relaxed and in-charge.

Realistic budget
Before you visit a dealership to test drive a car, be set on your spending limit, considering your ability to pay now and in the future. Frequently, during the sales process, buyers get caught up in the excitement of the car they really desire, aren’t willing to walk away, and end up purchasing a vehicle that is beyond their budget. Remember that salespeople are trying to make as much commission for themselves as possible. It may not concern them that putting you in a car that is beyond your means might place you in a bad financial position. It is your responsibility to protect yourself in this regard.  So, make sure that you are firm as to how much you want to spend, how much financing you need, how much monthly payment you will be able to handle, and how much down payment you can afford.

Know what vehicle you want to buy
Before you visit any dealership, you should know the make and model you want to buy, or at least have it narrowed down. Do your research to make sure the model meets your requirements. What features are important to you? Is it the color, fuel efficiency, personal or family use, or resale value? Read Consumer Reports to narrow down your search. Do not let a salesperson redirect you toward a vehicle you haven’t researched.  If you like the looks of it, it is okay to go home, do your research, take your time, and come back another day.

Visit manufacturer websites and 3rd party sites to read the reviews and feedback of actual car buyers and unbiased professionals. Make sure the websites you use are reputable and reliable.  Some suggestions are:

• kbb.com
• edmunds.com
• caranddriver.com
• consumerreports.org

Know the dealership
You should ask your friends and family for referrals and their experience with local dealerships. Nothing comes close to personal experience and word-of-mouth.

It is smart to use social media sites, like Facebook, Bing, and Google Plus, to do research on local dealerships. See what people are saying about the dealership, its sales staff, after-sales customer service, and the way a dealership handles a complaint. It is also a good idea to use sites like Dealer Rater and Yelp to read comments and feedback of customers.

If you do decide to visit a dealership, do not be afraid to ask questions.  An honest and reputable dealer will answer all your questions, without hedging.

Bring a friend
If you feel intimidated by car salespersons, then it may be a good idea to take a friend with you for support during the test drive, finalizing your selection, and price negotiations.  Make sure whoever you take with you is fully apprised of the budget you have set for yourself and the research you have completed, ahead of time.  Be aware of add-ons that the car salesperson may try to sell you.  Don’t be afraid to negotiate and say no when the price is outside of your budget.

Walk away
If not all of your expectations are met, walk away.   Even if you feel you are ready to buy, you ought to take a night to sleep on your decision and make sure it is the vehicle you really want, and that all the terms are fair.   Do not fall for the common sales tactic claiming that another person is looking at the vehicle and that you might lose it if you do not act immediately.

Discuss the car, its price, financing costs, and other details with your family and friends. Most importantly, listen to what they have to say.  Remember that they may be far more objective than you, at this point in the game.
